Luckily I still have the collection on my PlayStation 3 if I want to hack up some demons. I waited a while hoping for a patch, but so far there hasn’t been any improvement. It seems weird that a bare port of an old game would cause this kind of issues. On my desktop the game kept crashing while on my laptop it was like I was playing the game in a permanent slow-motion mode unless I set the resolution to the minimum setting. Talking about the PC version, I do have to note that I had some serious technical issues with Devil May Cry 3. If you own this version, there’s little reason to buy this new version, but especially for PC games it is a nice way to play these games. This HD collection seems to exist for those who are interested in discovering this classic trilogy and veterans who want to revisit it, when not having access to the original games or the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 version. In the end, none of the three games still really holds up today and they can feel outdated to those who are used to the more flash and streamlined games of the current generation. The second installment received a fair amount of criticism for its ugly environments, easier and less interesting gameplay and a more brooding and silent Dante. Especially the first and third Devil May Cry are still considered masterpieces in the genre. So what this collection offers, it a slightly upgraded versions of classics of a bygone era. Qualifying this port as “lazy” would be easy, as there seems to be very little effort put into it. In the PC version, you’ll even see the Xbox button-configuration for actions, no matter what controller or keyboard configuration you use. The textures haven’t been reworked, the menu’s are still in a 4:3 ratio, while the cinematics are stretched to 16:9 without making them in high definition. The HD collection is a basic port with a few minor snags such as bloom effects, but in every other regard it's the superior version. But other than that, there’s little improvements or additions made to the game. The old port is a barely-functional trainwreck that doesn't even correctly support controllers. Straightforward portĪside the improved framerate and resolution, there’s also an art gallery that’s been added. Making their way to the current generation, the games now run in 60 fps and 1080p. They received a HD port for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, which included the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 3 and all three games were upscaled to run in 720p. While there’s also a 4th installment and a reboot, this HD Collection focuses on the 3 first games that were released on PlayStation 2. Each game in the series is a stylized hack & slash fest with Gothic horror overtones.
